Are online degrees respected by businesses?

I have some doubt about getting a online degree, because I don't think businesses will take people seriously who have online degrees. But it certainly would fit my schedule since I work 45-50 hours a week. I need to get out of my dead-end job!

  1. my mom works at a linemen college and her boss always says its not a real degree but as long as the government goes with it it should be good
  2. I respect the desire to better yourself and go back to school, but your hunch is right, MOST places will not have a lot of respect for "online" degrees...However there are many part-time, night programs, etc...Hopefully you live near some metropolitan area where this is an option...Taking a few online courses is not a bad idea in terms of cost or to get a certain credit, but you would ideally want to graduate from a brick and mortar institution, not a "degree mill" where any average Joe can pay a minimal amount of money, do a minimal amount of study, and then claim to have got an education...I'm not certain "how close" you are, but my suggestion would be to chip away at it as you can...If you come within 30 hours of graduating or something, and truly in a dead end job, it might be better to take out loans and go a couple semesters to finish up in 9 months... As a last resort, I suppose online might be better than nothing...Then could do graduate work later somewhere else.
  3. not really...but it doesnt hurt to try
  4. No, they are not respected. Try going to night classes or enrolling part time at a real school.
  5. There are many online institutions that are highly regarded by businesses. Look for an online institution that is approved by the state where you live and is accredited by an accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Go to <us.gov> to find information about this. Be a wise consumer -- check out the institution before you sign on. Good luck!
