What is it like living in Houston? Why are houses so cheap compared to other cities in US?
We were thinking of relocating to Houston,Texas. We are software professionals with 2 small children. We have lived in places like Bay area(California),Atlanta(Georgia) and Connecticut. Just wanted to know why the houses are so cheap in a city like that? Also, what is it like living in Houston or it's suburbs?

- It's hot and very humid. Roaches are a common problem in most homes. Termite infestation is pretty common (make sure to check well for it, even in a new home). The city is huge, traffic is a mega problem specially living in suburbs. Better to live inside Loop 610; Bellaire are is good, but houses in 500,000 range. Houses are not cheaper for Houstonians (but yes compared to Bay Area. I'd stay in Bay Area or Connecticut.
- Houston (IMO) is a dump. I lived there for four years, worked there off and on for ten. Actually, in League City, 20 miles or so south. "We're not in Houston", my ex would say. "Close enough", I'd say. Try to drive up Bay Area Blvd any time after Thanksgiving. It turns into a parking lot. I worked all over Houston when I was a welder for the gas company. I hated Houston with a passion. Can't tell Stafford from Missouri City from Sugarland without the signs telling you where you are. Then there's the parking lots that are I-10, US59, and I-45 (god help you if you work normal hours and you're stuck on one of those). Me and the old man tried to get from the I-45/US59 exchange to the other side of town, and it took us two hours to get to Sugar Creek. Drive ten feet and stop. Drive ten feet and stop. Good thing he had plenty of beer. I'm going there next weekend. Ugh. Oh, yeah...alpla's right about the heat and humidity. Wait 'til you step out at ten o'clock at night, and it's 90 degrees with 90% humidity. And don't even ask about the skeeters.
